Thank you, Ogdensburg

To The Editor:

I, Michael Rory Spellman, am leaving Ogdensburg with greatest memories of a great, small city where I was very well appreciated as a veteran. I started out as a stranger. Being institutionalized to the beginning of independent living was a struggle. For the first two months I felt like going back to St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center. Everything seemed so different. Should I go back to Plattsburgh, or should I stay in Ogdensburg?

I am now returning to Plattsburgh very shortly in the near future, my home town, to help my family and a few remaining friends who are still alive. One particular, John Edward Filion, is in a wheelchair.

The dreams have ended, and my post-traumatic stress syndrome is coming to an end. Thanks to St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center and the great citizens of Ogdensburg, this has become true. It is still there and will always be there. However, it is much easier to deal with now than my first admission in 1981. I shall be back to Ogdensburg and St. Lawrence County to help fight for the cause of St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center to stay open because if not for St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, Plattsburgh would have lost three-quarters of its citizens between 1965 and 1982. I know this from hearing stories and telling tales of St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center at the two roughest bars in Plattsburgh. Many have died, yet I still have fond memories of those people, like I will leave Ogdensburg with fondest memories.

Gratefully yours,

Michael Rory Spellman
