GOUVERNEUR — Advance Auto Parts is planning a store in the village.

Advance Auto Parts, which has stores in Carthage, Ogdensburg, Potsdam, Watertown and Lowville, is planning a 6,200-square-foot building on East Main Street, on property occupied by Richardson’s Flooring, a small house and a vacant lot, Code Enforcement Officer Michael J. McQuade said.

Mr. McQuade said he has set up a meeting for Aug. 15 for the village Planning Board and village Zoning Board of Appeals to consider the project.

Success of the proposal requires a zoning variance for parking. Village code would require 64 parking spaces for the square footage that is proposed for the building, but 31 will be requested, Mr. McQuade said.

“They don’t need 64 spaces,” he said.

The proposal also will face site plan review.

Construction could start in September.

Richardson Flooring, which was unhappy with how the state Department of Transportation road reconstruction project would affect its operation, has received village approval to move its business to 1089 Route 11.

The DOT construction is not expected to reach the East Main Street site until next year, but Advance Auto Parts will be able to work with the state agency on a single entrance rather than the three access points that would have been required for Richardson’s, the vacant lot and the house, Mr. McQuade said.

The village also is served by three other auto parts stores: Gouverneur Auto Parts on Park Street, Newvine’s Auto Parts on West Main Street and G&R Auto on East Main Street.
