Hargave wins back to back at Mohawk International

HOGANSBURG - Lisbon Mod-Lite driver Joel Hargrave is only in his second season of racing at Mohawk International Speedway.

And Hargrave is exceeding his expectations.

“Last year, we were competitive but I never got the checkered flag. And this year, I’ve won three races all at Mohawk and I can tell you - the first was was the hardest,” said Hargrave.

“SUNY Canton sponsors me and Boyer Realty. They’ve been great sponsors. Right now, I’ve won back to back at Mohawk and its been exciting because I’m leading points standings there and also at Can-Am in LaFargeville. We’ve been racing at Brockville and Cornwall when I can so were pretty busy.” Last week at Mohawk, in Mod Lite action, Dan and Tim Reif led the field to the green in the 12 lap feature go. Dan Reif would get the advantage as the field headed off into turn one. But Hargrave has been the man to beat in the Mod Lite division in 2013 and he quickly charged from his fourth starting spot to grab the lead early on. Behind the leader Mathieu Robinson, a former Mod Lite champion, was working his way forward taking the second spot just past halfway. However Hargrave was able to survive two late race cautions and a fast closing Robinson for his third win.

On July 12, Scott Waldrif started on the pole and jumped out to the early race lead. Waldrif battled Mathieu Robinson for the lead in the early going until Hargrave made a bid for the top spot on lap three just before the first caution flag flew. On the restart Hargrave jumped out to a strong lead over Waldrif, Robinson, Harley Brown and Dan Reif. With the field battling hard nobody was catching Hargrave on this night, as he became the first two-time winner in the Mod Lite division.

Waldrif settled for second with Harley Brown, Mathieu Robinson and Dan Reif completing the top five.

Hargrave, whose crew consists of Brad Winters, Brad Carr, and Roger Winters, has 349 points to date with Harvey Brown at 324 at Mohawk. Hargrave finished 15th last season with 150 points and Heuvelton’s Bryan Green took first 876.

Green has been recovering from a serious Jet Ski accident this season. At Can-Am, Hargrave is tied for first with Rich Rainville with 96 points and weather has hindered that schedule.
