MASSENA – Mrs. Gloria E. Bethel, formerly of St. Hwy. 56 in Raymondville, passed away on Tuesday evening, July 30, 2013, at the St. Regis nursing Home, Massena, where she had been a patient since January, 2009.

Gloria was born on January 23rd, 1924 in Raymondville, the daughter of the late William G. and Elva L. Nichols Carr. She attended Raymondville Grammar School and graduated in 1942 from Norfolk High School. On July 31, 1942, she married Allen T. Bethel at the Norfolk Methodist Church parsonage with Rev. Frank Brown officiating. Allen predeceased Gloria on March 28, 2000.

Gloria worked at one time for The Puritan Clothing Store in Massena. She was an active member of the UMC of Raymondville where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, was a member of the United Methodist Women and of the couples group, The Merry Weds. She was also a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star Lyra Chapter #230 in Norwood and of the Massena Memorial Hospital Auxillary. She enjoyed collecting colored glass, doing crafts, and reading. For many years, Allen and Gloria wintered in Palm Harbor Florida. She also enjoyed spending time at their camp on the Grasse River in Madrid with family and friends.

Gloria is survived by two children, son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Agnes (Sweets) of Raymondville; and daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Gary Cook of Massena; grandchildren, Timothy and Amy Bethel, Terry and Tanya Cook, Tracy and Megan Bethel, and Candace and Dickie Sheridan; great grandchildren, Alyssa Sheridan, Kristan, Braedon, Michaela, and Tyler Bethel, Lyndon and Elliot Cook; one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Donald Young of Goldsboro N.C.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Elwood H. Carr, on November 16, 1995; and sisters, W. Jean Dumers on October 3, 2001, and Ruth M. Felix on September 21, 2011.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home on Friday, 3-7 PM. Funeral services will be at the Raymondville United Methodist Church, on Saturday, August 3, at 11:00 AM, with Lay Pastoral Assistant Martha Helmer , officiating. Burial will follow in the Raymondville Cemetery.
