ALEXANDRIA BAY — The American Red Cross of Northern New York will honor volunteers and supporters at 6 p.m. Tuesday during a celebration at the Scenic View Park Pavilion.

People from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties will be recognized for their humanitarian efforts involving local, state and national emergencies, disasters or other needs.

“The Red Cross mission is to alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors,” Chapter Jane G. Gendron said in a prepared statement. “We accomplish that mission only because of the dedication of our volunteers who make themselves available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.”

Volunteers comprise a majority of the agency’s workforce in the north country.

The following awards will be given Tuesday:

n Blood Services Volunteer Award — to Janet Stitt, Canton, and Kathleen Wallace, Lowville

n Disaster Preparedness and Response Award — to Megan Fulton, Cape Vincent

n Good Neighbor Award — to Comfort Inn and Peer to Peer

n Health and Safety Services Award — to Julie Hull, Watertown

n Service to the Armed Forces Award — to Gary Coffey, Hermon

n Volunteer Leadership Award — to Dale Roberts, Lewis County; Angie Blair, St. Lawrence County; and Anthony Marra, Jefferson County

n Youth Award — Jeremy Smith, Watertown

n Years of Service Award, five years — to Gary Coffey, Hermon; Ricki Harriman, DeKalb; JoAnn Schwob, Potsdam; Timothy Schwob, Potsdam; and Peggy Sepko, Watertown

People interested in Red Cross volunteer opportunities may call the local chapter at 782-4410.
