Properties bought by Alcoa will go to state

MASSENA — Barely more than a month ago, Alcoa acquired three pieces of property in the town of Louisville. The purchase of 375 acres was made on June 28 for $1,027,360.12.

The three pieces of land and their prices were:

n Curran Logging, Inc., Massena, sold three parcels of property — 253 acres, 17 acres and 28 acres — bounded by Wilson Hill Road and Route 37 for $576,170.12.

n Seaway Timber Harvesting, Inc., Massena, sold 76 acres of land for $151,240.

n Curran Development Inc., Massena, sold 1.12 acres of land bounded by Route 37 for $299,950.

The property newly acquired by Alcoa will be transferred to the state, according to Alcoa spokesperson Laurie A. Marr.

“We purchased it to donate it to the state as part of the NRDA settlement. What the state does with it is not up to us,” Ms. Marr said. “The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe was one of the trustees of the settlement.”

Natural Resource Damage Assessment program manager for the tribe, Barbara Tarbell, said the tribe will use two parcels of the property.

“There are two parcels that Alcoa is purchasing. We treat them as two separate parcels,” Ms. Tarbell said. “They are the ones located at Wilson Hill and Coles Creek. Both of them, they provide significant wildlife benefit.”

The recent purchase of property was a part of the $19.4 million settlement the tribe made with both Alcoa and the Reynolds Metals Company for damage caused by contaminants released by the aluminum manufacturer’s Massena operations since the 1950’s.
