Vegetable stand stolen in Waddington; owner wants it back no questions asked

WADDINGTON — A roadside vegetable stand was stolen from a front yard in Waddington on Wednesday night, and the owner hopes to have it returned.

“There will be no questions asked if [the thief or thieves] return it,” Shirley G. Belgarde said.

The 3-by-5-foot chestnut wood stand was taken from the lawn of 132 Lincoln Ave. in the center of Waddington late Wednesday or early Thursday.

Mrs. Belgarde said she used the stand to sell vegetables and fruit she grows at her farm.

“It was an everyday thing. We do it all summer long,” she said. “We have a lot of customers.”

Each night the stand would be cleared of any remaining produce and left out.

“We’ve done it for four years” without any problems, Mrs. Belgarde said.

But on Thursday morning, she realized the stand was gone.

“It’s quite a large stand,” she said. “It would take probably two people to take it.”

Mrs. Belgarde said she built the stand herself, for about $75.

“It was a nice stand,” she said. “It’s very important to me.”

State police, who are investigating the incident, said the crime was likely an act of vandalism or carried out by a competitor.

“I’m going to have to build another one,” Mrs. Belgarde said. “This time I’m chaining it to a tree.”
