Robert E. Black


Robert E. Black, Sr., 75, NYS Rt. 12, Clayton passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service in honor of his wishes. Arrangements are with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc.

Mr. Black was born on Grindstone Island, town of Clayton on July 14, 1938, son of Lawrence E. and Catherine E. Sulier Black. He attended school on Grindstone Island and graduated from LaFargeville High School. Robert was an honorably discharged 6-year veteran in the US Army. While serving his country in Germany and Switzerland he proudly played on the Army baseball team as a pitcher.

A marriage to Janet M. House ended in divorce. He married Lena M. Torngren on January 20, 1990 in Watertown.

He was a maintenance supervisor at Crowley Foods, LaFargeville and retired after forty years of service to the company. Robert was a member of American Legion Post 1788, LaFargeville. He was an avid baseball player, coach, and fan, and he also had played basketball. He enjoyed trapping, snowmobiling, camping, and fishing and was a well-known prankster who loved nothing more than spending time with his family.

Besides his wife, Lena, he is survived by his four children and their spouses, Roxane and Gary Baumbach, W. Monroe, Robert and Amber Black, Jr., LaFargeville, Diane and Shawn Felt, Satalite Beach, FL, and Christine and Jeff Cupernall, Clayton; five grandchildren, Gary Baumbach, Jr., Bailey Baumbach, Cody Black, Lacey Black, and Jessica Cupernall; three brothers and their wives, Norman and Cindy, Seneca Falls, Gary and Sue, Dexter, and Richard and Pam, Watertown; three sisters-in-law, Joan, LaFargeville, Sharon, Clayton, and Carol, Depauville; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Robert was predeceased by his parents, and his three brothers, John, Leslie, and Leo Black.
