Quality leaderboard at Waddington

WADDINGTON - The top of the leaderboard featured a hometown, intercollegiate and even international flavor at the Waddington Homecoming 5K River Run-Walk-Rollerblade on Saturday. Jon Eng and Emily Cotey, a pair of Norwood-Norfolk standouts enjoying successful collegiate running careers, raced away to overall honors in the run. Eng, a St. Lawrence University senior, led the men’s field in 16:53 and Cotey, who qualified for the NCAA Division III CrossCountry Championships for SUNY Cortland last fall, emerged as the first lady of the day at 19:07.

Eng picked up his second medalist award at Waddington in three years while rounding into to form after suffering an injury which sidelined him for the entire outdoor track-field season.

“I really feel good now and I have been training hard. I really want to have a big year,” said Eng.

After achieving a series of individual accolades, Cotey is looking forward to a big year for the Lady Dragons of Cortland.

“I am really excited about our cross country season. Hopefully we can qualify for the NCAA’s as a team,” she said.

Richie Garvey of Phoenix AZ, enjoying his annual St.Lawrence River summer sojourn to his native Ogdensburg , paced the rollerbladers with a time of 12:48.

It was Garvey’s first competitive rollerblade race but he is hardly a stranger to inline skating. He and his brother Randy both played for Team Labeda of Southern California which recently won the 35-Over North American Inline Hockey Championships in Toronto, Ont.

Garvey has also played major roles in the global development of inline athletics.

He has enjoyed great success guiding the Columbian Junior Roller Hockey Program and was recently named as the South American Commissioner for Major League Roller Hockey.

“Inline skating and roller hockey in South America is like it was in the US in the 1990s. I have been travelling to Columbia every three weeks and the sport is really growing,” says Garvey.

“And there also 12 NHL players who started as inline skaters and switched to the ice as youngsters.”

The Madrid-Waddington area accounted for 14 entries on the age group leaderboard led by the sibling trio of Gabriella (Female 14U), Cassidy (Female 15-19) and Austin Scott (Male 15-19) who each claimed division titles.
