CANTON — A St. Lawrence County jail inmate was arrested by sheriff’s deputies on a mixture of felony and misdemeanor charges.

Joseph J. Belile, 29, formerly of Massena, was initially accused of assaulting a fellow inmate and charged with second-degree assault. During his arrest, deputies determined that he had allegedly sent letters to a woman who has an order of protection against him that barred him from contact with her.

Mr. Belile was also charged with second-degree attempted criminal contempt, a misdemeanor, and with a felony count of aggravated family offense.

He was arraigned in Canton Town Court and ordered held without bail.
