St. Marguerite’s officers sound education

To the Editor:

My name is Aimee Flynn and I am the kindergarten teacher at our Catholic school, St. Marguerite D’Youville Academy. I’d like to speak with you not just as an educator, but also as a parent of children who have been fortunate enough to attend Catholic schools. I think we would all agree that our Catholic schools provide an outstanding education, an atmosphere of love and acceptance, and an environment where faith is nurtured and developed.

But why should you choose SMDA? As someone who sees the everyday life inside the school, I’d like to share a few special moments that have touched my heart and may help explain why Catholic education is one of the most precious gifts you could ever give your child. Our school is a place where big sixth-grade boys rush over to put their arms around a crying 4-year-old to comfort them. Children walk by the school chapel, wave to the tabernacle and whisper, “Good morning, Jesus!” We watch the joy our students bring to the residents of St Josephs Home — making crafts with them and singing for them. When our attention was turned to the tragedy of Newtown, Conn., we were able to help our children find comfort in God through prayer, together, in school, knowing we can turn to God in all things. We are a place where families laugh together and sing praise together as Father blesses their dogs, cats, and yes even their sheep and pigs on St. Francis’ feast day. Our parents and grandparents become a real part of their children’s education, helping in the lunchroom, sharing talents, and even helping with after school clubs.

We watched our special needs students move the crowd to tears as they sang in front of the entire school during Catholic SchoolsWeek karaoke.

Even the youngest of our students become leaders of prayer during school services, Stations of the Cross, and participating in Masses each month. It was wonderful watching our entire school go wild when we were awarded the Kiwanis Cup last year for academic excellence, excellence in the arts and our many service projects. It’s knowing our students will grow up with a respect for their country, sending care packages to soldiers, and honoring our soldiers with cards at the Veterans Day Ceremony. It’s seeing the children re-enact the Nativity each year at the finale of our Christmas concert, knowing that in this place, the children will understand that Jesus is still the reason we celebrate. It’s watching these precious children grow through the years becoming our altar servers, lectors, parents, leaders and even the priests of today and tomorrow. It’s the love of Jesus that can be felt as soon as you walk through our doors, and it’s the support from our parish families that makes it possible for us to serve these little ones who will be the future of our faith. As we enter this time of registration for the coming school year, please consider SMDA - as an investment in the spiritual, emotional and academic growth of your child, and in the future of our Catholic Faith. Every child deserves the opportunity for a Catholic Education and no child is turned away because of their family’s financial situation ; we will find a way to make it affordable for you. Let us be the extension of your family values and the loving care you want for your child during their formative years. Together we can be the Christ-centered village that supports you in raising your child.
