The New York State Amber Alert was activated Thursday and a suspect was believed to be traveling with an abducted child in Northern New York.

The alert was called off two hours later, and police dispatch reported an arrest in the case in Gouverneur. Gouverneur police would not release any information late Thursday.

The suspect earlier was identified as Peter A. Tarbox, who was believed to be driving north on Interstate 81 and heading to Norwood. Mr. Tarbox, described as a 39-year-old white male, was reported to be in a green Saab with unknown registration. The car was reported near Syracuse just before 9 p.m.

The child, according to the alert, is Alexandria Jade Long, 10, who has short, brown hair and hazel eyes. She is about 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 100 pounds. She was abducted in Gordon, Pa., according to Pennsylvania state police.

Mr. Tarbox is said to be a former acquaintance of the child’s mother from seven years ago. His relationship with the girl was unclear.
