Mr. and Mrs. Robert Axtell, 50 years


CANTON — Mr. and Mrs. Robert Axtell, Canton, observed their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 8.

Mr. Axtell married MaryAnn Gottshall on Aug. 8, 1963, at the Congregational Church of Barre, Vt. Honor attendants were Harriet and Bob Brannum, address unknown.

Mr. Axtell was the head ski coach at Norwich University, Northfield, Vt. Mrs. Axtell taught physical education in Barre.

After moving to South Colton, the couple lived at the St. Lawrence University Snow Bowl, where Mr. Axtell was the SLU ski coach and director of the ski area. Later, they opened Axtell’s Sports, Canton, a ski and sporting goods store. Mrs. Axtell was a physical education teacher at Madrid-Waddington Central School, Madrid, prior to working at Axtell’s Sports. In 1973, Mr. and Mrs. Axtell moved to Pierrepont and built their log cabin. They retired in 1999 after the sale of their business.

Mr. Axtell enjoys cross country skiing, cycling, golf and gardening. Mrs. Axtell enjoys golf, tennis, pickleball, walking, reading and crossword puzzles.

The couple has three children, Christy Hodgins, Sufside Beach, S.C., and Todd and Jodi (Gary) Canfield, all of Canton; and two grandchildren.
