O’Connor pitches well for Rochester at USSSA Softball World Series

MOIRA - Brusnton-Moira Central softball standout Emily O’Connor from Moira put herself up against the best pitchers in the country in the United States Specialty Sports Association 18U Fastpitch Softball World series held in Maryland the week of July 30-August 3.

Games were played in Ocean City and Salisbury, MD and the 16-year-old O’Connor was in the pitching rotation with two other hurlers for the Rochester Thunder. She was given the ball in game three of the World Series where she went up against one of the best teams in the tournament from Virginia which entered as one of the top-ranked teams in the country. O’Connor only allowed two runs and earned the winning decision in a 5-2 victory over the powerhouse team.

O’Connor was again given the ball against some great competition in game six of the week-long tournament. This time she faced a team that was undefeated in the World Series tournament at 5-0. At the end of the seven innings O’Connor, she walked off the field having hurled a thrilling 1-0 shutout win. O’Connor had relief work in two other games. The Rochester Thunder finished the tournament at 4-3, losing in the second round of the finals.

The weekend of July 20, O’Connor picked up the MVP award in game three in a tournament in Rotterdam with a 10-1 win to highlight was has been a very successful summer for the Brushton-Moira student who is set to enter her junior year this fall. She played at nine tournaments this summer including Maryland, New Jersey, Rotterdam, Buffalo, Hamburg, Lockport, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, PA., and a local tournament in Ogdensburg.

O’Connor has been the starting pitcher for the varsity softball team at B-M since eighth grade. Among her awards were the selection to the East Division All-Northern Athletic Conference First Team and Watertown Daily Times All-North Second Team. She has also picked up several game MVP awards throughout the summer for her pitching and hitting. O’Connor has put the bat on the ball well hitting over .500 for the summer.
