Thomas P. Hammill

Thomas Patrick Hammill, 68, passed away August 4, 2013, in Florida where he had lived for many years. He was born in Potsdam, NY, on January 4, 1945 and graduated from St. Lawrence Central High School, Brasher Falls, NY. After high school, he worked for an airline company before he joined the United States Army. During his career in the army, he rose to the rank of Captain, having received numerous medals and commendations. His defining experience in the US Army was in Special Forces during two tours of duty as a Green Beret in Viet Nam and Cambodia. After eight years in the army, Captain Hammill was medically retired from the army with a disability from exposure to Agent Orange and PTSD.

After leaving the army, Captain Hammill also worked in a variety of sales positions in automobiles, real estate and firearms before moving to Florida.

He was predeceased in 1983 by his father, Jeremiah James Hammill, and by his former wife, Susan, in 2013. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Hammill (Brasher Falls, NY), three brothers: Terrence (Oswego, NY), Stephen (Concord, CA), Jeremiah (Winthrop, NY) and three sisters: Jane Hampton (Solvay, NY), Kathleen (Fayetteville, NY), and Stephanie Wood (Brant Lake, NY). He also leaves a son, Thomas (Columbia, MD) and three daughters: Lisa McKeever (Phillipsburg, NJ), Chelsea MacDonald and Amanda Silvernail (Syracuse, NY) and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Thomas Patrick Hammill was the grandson of Michael Thomas Hammill (1882-1955), founder and director of the Hammill Funeral Home located in Winthrop, NY.

Thomas also was a direct descendant of his great-great-grandfather, John Hammill (1795-1879), born in County Antrim, Ireland, who was one of the earliest Irish immigrants in Northern New York, arriving in Hogansburg, NY in 1820, when that area was populated mostly by Native Americans, French missionaries and fur traders.
