Lisbon codes officer hired on provisional basis

LISBON - Code enforcement officer Christopher J. Sherwin was hired by full time the town at Thursday’s meeting on a provisional basis until he takes a required civil service exam next year.

Mr. Sherwin began working 24 hours per week in May for a trial period.

Because working more than 20 hours is considered full time by the state, the town council was required to either reduce his hours or rehire him on a provisional basis until he passes a civil service exam.

Prior to May Mr. Sherwin was working 12 to 15 hours per week. He makes approximately $18 an hour.

Mr. Sherwin said he did not feel he would be able to meet the requirements of the position at less than 20 hours per week.

The town council unanimously supported hiring full time Mr. Sherwin on a provisional basis and requesting a civil service exam on his behalf.

“I would like to keep him on at 24 hours,” Councilor Alan D. Dailey said.

In June Councilor Gary J. Jarvis, liaison to the town Planning Board, said members of the planning board were happy that Mr. Sherwin was working more hours.

In January Planning Board President Steven Wallace said Mr. Sherwin wasn’t keeping up with the demands of the job.

But Mr. Jarvis said having Mr. Sherwin on call for 24 hours a week had satisfied the planning board.

Mr. Sherwin said he expects to take the test in June.
