Work behind the scenes aided first aid classes

To The Editor:

Since the fall of 2007, the Ogdensburg Free Academy Athletic Department has been approved and recognized by the New York State Education Department as a state-certified agency, offering courses of study in first aid and CPR knowledge and skills for coaches and meeting the provision of Education Law 3001 (b)(c) and regulations of the commissioner of education, Section 135.5. In addition, the members of the certification/re-certification staff are certified as instructors to teach the state-approved first aid and CPR courses for coaches.

Oh behalf of the OFA Athletic Department, I would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge and personally thank several members of this highly proficient staff who recently assisted with our annual certification session. During this two-day period, many coaches from Ogdensburg and the surrounding communities successfully completed the required objectives and skills evaluations, in accordance with the curricula of the American Heart Association and the state Education Department.

SUNY Canton Head Athletic Trainer Christine Scuderi organized and instructed both the first aid update and initial first aid for coaches classes. She was the only instructor for this portion of the certification process and did an exceptional job leading and facilitating all of the coursework.

OFA health teacher Dianne Jeneault took personal time during her summer vacation to give back to our community by doing an amazing job instructing, demonstrating and facilitating all of the CPR/AED courses.

OFA nurse Lisa Gerlach contributed immensely not only by assisting with the courses being taught but also behind the scenes, including but not limited to making contacts, scheduling, organizing and completing all the paperwork that was required to execute such an undertaking.

Kennedy Elementary School nurse Keylee Halpin kindly and charitably gave her time during the certification period to assist with the execution of a CPR/AED course.

I would also like to extend a special thank-you to Athletic Department secretary Mariah Ahmad for all her time, initiative and attention to detail. She was a tremendous help organizing and coordinating all the logistics; her input and assistance were immeasurable and contributed to the successful conclusion of the training and certification sessions.

To all, thank you for your time, commitment, professionalism and, most importantly, willingness to give back to our community. It’s greatly appreciated. You are to be commended for your efforts.
