WADDINGTON – Mr. George L. Northrop, 68, formerly of 1766 County Route 44, peacefully passed away Friday afternoon, August 16, 2013 with his family by his side at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for the past two years.

George was born January 6, 1945 in Massena, the son of the late Clarence and Marion “Faye” O’Connor Northrop. He graduated from Massena Central School in 1964. On September 11, 1964, he entered the US Army, serving first in Korea before going to Vietnam. He was awarded numerous commendations for his service before his honorable discharge on September 25, 1967. He married Linda Mayette of Waddington on November 16, 1968 at the Waddington Methodist Church, she predeceased him on January 6, 2011.

George worked at Reynold’s Metals as a pot tender until his retirement in 2000 after many years of service. After his retirement, he went to work as a Green Thumber at Coles Creek State Park for many years. He was a proud member of the Waddington American Legion, where he was a Past Commander and he also was a former member of the Waddington Fire Department, once serving as an assistant chief. He enjoyed working with wood, hunting and fishing. But perhaps his greatest enjoyment was the time he spent with his family, especially his grandsons.

George is survived by his two children, Tammy and Eric Serguson of Massena and Richard Northrop and his fiancÚ, Crystal Matzan, also of Massena; his four grandsons, Nicholas and Jordan LaVine and Dalton and Cody Serguson; his brothers, David and Sharon Northrop and Donald Northrop, all of Massena; and many nieces and nephews.

A Graveside service with full military honors will be held Saturday, August 24th, 10:00 AM at the New Brookside Cemetery, Waddington. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the St. Regis Nursing Home Activities Fund, 89 Grove Street, Massena, NY 13662

Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where condolences and memories can be made online at www.donaldsonfh.com.
