To The Editor:
In his Gospel, St. John tells us of Jesus promise to his friends, I will not leave you orphans, I will come back to you John 14:18.
When I hear the words there is no God or God isnt real, I cant help but feel sadness in my heart. When difficulty, suffering, sorrow, or hardship comes into our lives, we have a tendancy to play the blame game.
We look to blame God and others. Sometimes we blame ourselves and feel as though God is punishing us or we just plain get mad at God for allowing bad things to happen. Believe it or not, that is not the way God works. God loves us unconditionally. He wants to be with us each and every moment of every day. He wants to walk with us in our journey through the darkness of faith.
God is not the one responsible for all the bad things going on in our world today. He has blessed us with the gifts of Love, Faith, and Prayer to help us through difficult times. Reacting in a spirit of anger or hatred gives birth to sin. Holding on to anger or hatred feeds the weeds of evil spreading sin like wildfire. Love is the one thing that cannot hurt. Faith keeps us strong when life hurts the most.
Trying times are times to try more faith. Each and every day is a gift or an opportunity to allow our faith to be strengthened in our journey to keep hope alive. Prayer is the lifeline God gave us to communicate with him. The strength we gain in our day to day struggle to live the fullness of life more abundantly stems from keeping God at the center of our lives.
Perhaps God is leading us out into the wilderness to speak to our hearts. If your faith were the size of a mustard seed you would say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it would move; nothing would be impossible for you Matthew 17:20. We can either let the mountain of difficulty take control of us or we can take control of the mountain of difficulty. We need to stand with confidence, find the courage to move forward in the darkness of faith, and keep our focus on Jesus in difficult times. With God all things are possible. All we have to do is trust and believe.
I think of my struggle with Sorrow and Suffering to find a new found freedom with joy and peace. I have had the grace to see three birds together whether they are finding nourishment on the ground or spreading their wings as they fly through the sky. This is Gods way of reminding me of his promise that he will provide for my needs, that he will not leave me orphaned, and that he will come to me through his spirit of love, and reveal himself to me. This is what gives me hope and affirms that God is real and truly present in my life. Asking God for an open heart and an open spirit is a step towards healing in the brokenness of the wounded world I live in.
Come, let us return to Yahweh. He will heal us. He will bandage our wounds, bring us back to life. He will come to us as showers come, like spring rains watering the earth Hosea 6: 1-4.
What God wants is our love.
