Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad fundraiser falls short of goal

The Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad is far off its goal to raise $250,000 by year’s end to help pay for its newly-opened headquarters at 1223 Pickering St.

But no one at the squad is complaining that the campaign for the $1.9 million project has thus far raised $70,000.

“I’m certainly not disappointed,” said Kenneth J. Gardner, the squad’s director of operations. “We understand the times.”

Times that are not conducive to donating disposable income.

“Economic times are hard now,” said R. Storm Cilley, the squad’s treasurer.

But squad officials aren’t worried about failing to meet overly ambitious deadlines. The squad has 30 years to pay off a low-interest $1.6 million U.S. Department of Agriculture and, Mr. Gardner, promised, there will be more fundraisers.

Last week’s dedication of the Debbie Abel Memorial Garden on the headquarters’ grounds is a symbol of fundraising with $9,240 generated by the donation of 154 inscribed bricks at $60 apiece.

There is room for more bricks.

“We can easily double that,” said Rosemarie Lovely, the squad’s fundraiser chairwoman.

“The memorial garden is a forever project,” Mr. Gardner said.
