Christy Martin, the woman viewed by many as popularizing women’s boxing in the 1990s, will appear as a special guest at next month’s fifth annual Carmen Basilio Quest for Champions at the Watertown Fairgrounds’ Exhibition Hall.

Martin, who held a 49-7-3 record with 31 knockouts at the time of her retirement in 2012, is confirmed for the Sept. 21 show, Watertown Area Boxing Club president John Pepe said.

Martin started her professional boxing career in 1989. After signing with promoter Don King in 1993, Martin rose to prominence, winning seven straight WBC women’s junior welterweight championships. In 1996, her victorious and bloody bout against Deirdre Gogarty in Las Vegas put her into the public eye and on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Martin continued to fight until 2012. She often appears at the International Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Canastota.

The Quest for Champions bouts begin at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5. For more information, visit www.watertownareaboxingclub.com
