July unemployment rates released Tuesday by the state Department of Labor show Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties improved from last year.
Compared with July 2012, the July 2013 unemployment rate decreased in Jefferson County from 9.5 to 8.5 percent, in Lewis County from 9.2 to 8.4 percent, and in St. Lawrence County from 11.0 to 9.3 percent. Jobless numbers in July in the tri-county area also dropped from June 2013. Jefferson County decreased from 8.8 to 8.5 percent, Lewis County from 9.0 to 8.4 percent, and St. Lawrence County from 9.6 to 9.3 percent. Although St. Lawrence County showed improvement, it recorded the third-highest unemployment rate statewide in July.
Compared with July 2012, the July 2013 unemployment rate in upstate New Yorks 52 counties decreased from 8.6 to 7.2 percent.
Over the same period, the statewide rate dropped from 8.9 to 7.6 percent, and the nationwide rate fell from 8.6 to 7.7 percent.
