City’s iconic pavilion to get a modern roof

For years, Thompson Park patrons had to endure leaks from the stone pavilion’s rotting cedar shake roof when it rained.

But the city of Watertown soon will embark on a $268,199 project to replace the pavilion’s roof with plastic recycled material that has not been used before in this area.

On Monday night, the Watertown City Council unanimously approved a contract with Sony NY Management and Construction Corp. to replace the roof with a recycled fiber composite that looks like a cedar shake system but does not have any of the time-consuming maintenance.

Sony will use the Enviroshake system, manufactured by the Chatham, Ontario, company of the same name, said City Engineer Kurt W. Hauk.

An Enviroshake roof will be installed on the nearby restrooms as well, he said.

It will be the first use of an Enviroshake roof in the north country, Mr. Hauk said.

Before the vote, council members asked about its durability and whether Mr. Hauk thought it was a good idea.

Replacing the pavilion roof and restrooms has been a pet project of Councilwoman Roxanne M. Burns for years. Before Monday’s vote, she went to City Hall to look at a sample of the plastic-material roof and liked what she saw.

From far away, it looks like the real thing, she said. Park patrons will not be able to tell the difference because “they won’t get that close,” she said.

“It’s a very nice alternative,” she said.

Mr. Hauk also said he likes the system, which has a lifetime guarantee and is not as difficult to maintain as authentic cedar shake roofs. Every seven years, cedar shake roofs need an extensive washing, he said.

Work on the pavilion roof should begin next month, Mr. Hauk said.
