July unemployment rates released Tuesday by the state Department of Labor show St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties improved from last year.
Compared with July 2012, the July 2013 unemployment rate decreased in St. Lawrence County from 11.0 to 9.3 percent, in Jefferson County from 9.5 to 8.5 percent, and in Lewis County from 9.2 to 8.4 percent.
Jobless numbers in July in the tri-county area also dropped from June 2013. St. Lawrence County decreased from 9.6 to 9.3 percent, Jefferson County decreased from 8.8 to 8.5 percent, and Lewis County from 9.0 to 8.4 percent.
Although St. Lawrence County showed improvement, it recorded the third-highest unemployment rate statewide in July. Compared with July 2012, the July 2013 unemployment rate in upstate New Yorks 52 counties decreased from 8.6 to 7.2 percent.
