The Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad’s dive team will take to the St. Lawrence River on Aug. 31 to do some cleaning up.

Literally.

The divers — with all certified local divers invited to join — will search in 25-foot depths off the city docks for whatever debris they can find. They will bring that debris to the surface and have it carted away by the city. Dive master R. Storm Cilley is expecting that area of the St. Lawrence River to yield no treasures.

“Picnic tables, old tires, trash barrels, baby carriages, bicycles,” he said Wednesday. “There is all kinds of debris in there.”

The squad is staging the cleanup as a community service obligation for having recently received from a California foundation a $2,500 grant to purchase scuba equipment.

“It’s the first time that we have done anything officially,” Mr. Cilley said.

The city of Ogdensburg will provide a loader and a dump truck to handle the debris.

Mr. Cilley is certain that the cleanup will make only a dent in removing years of debris that one way or another found its way to the river bottom.

“It’ll be probably a fraction of what’s down there,” he said.
