CLAYTON A 135-foot-long landing craft utility vessel owned by RJ Marine Associates, Clayton, left the north country Sunday afternoon for a two-month voyage to Alaska.
A six-man crew was hired by RJ Marine for the delivery voyage of about 8,000 miles, which will include a two-week stop in Seattle, Wash.
The military-style vessel will be leased to complete a number of public and private projects on the southeast Alaskan coast, said DeWitt L. Withington, port captain for RJ Marine. It will be used to transport heavy equipment and vehicles.
This will carry anything you can drive on board or lift on board with a crane, Mr. Withington said. We have several projects already lined up, mostly federal projects.
This isnt the first long voyage made by the companys vessels, he said. Voyages have been made to Belize, the Bahamas, California, Alabama and Florida.
