Salvation Army in Ogdensburg still needs more board members

The Salvation Army’s mission of “Doing the most good” may be somewhat challenged when it comes to the iconic organization’s Ogdensburg chapter.

The chapter, located at 401 Franklin St., is still dealing with the problem of a member-depleted board of directors. There are currently seven people on a board that, according to the organization’s bylaws, should have 28 members.

But the bylaws requirement, according to Capt. Timothy A. Shaffer, is flexible, and he would be satisfied with a whole lot fewer.

“If we could get it up to 15,” he said Thursday, “we’d be happy with it.”

Mr. Shaffer is well aware that an unwillingness to commit spare time is at the heart of the board’s membership problems. But the organization, he pointed out, is only asking for mere hours for monthly board meetings and annual seasonal events such as the Red Kettle donation campaign at Christmas and the Stuff the Bus school supplies program in August.

“It’s not like we’re asking them to give up their lives,” Mr. Shaffer said. “If they want to be a part of it, they’d make the time.”

The last time that the Salvation Army Board of Directors had a full 28-member roster was in the mid-1960s, Mr. Shaffer said.

“I don’t see that ever happening again,” he said.
