Form-fitting ‘jeggings’ prompt a change in Hammond’s school dress code

HAMMOND - No more leggings, jeggings, or spandex gear will pass as appropriate pants for school, say Hammond Central School Board of Education members.

School board members unanimously agreed Tuesday to change the district’s dress code to prohibit students from wearing the hip-hugging clothing.

“Kids are always going to be pushing the dress code,” board member Bernard A. Martin said. “But this is inappropriate.”

Jeggings are leggings made of spandex that are designed to look like tight, form-fitting jeans.

School Principal Karen Carswell said the suggestion came from the students, not administrators during a student survey held at the end of the year. She applauded the students for the suggestion.

The form-fitting style of clothing has become more popular in the last year, Superintendent Douglas H. McQueer said.

“Some of the students felt that their classmates were cheating on the dress code,” Mr. McQueer said.

Students will still be allowed to wear tight leggings, but only under certain conditions.

“If a student wants to wear them underneath legal-length shorts or under ankle-length pants or dresses, that’s fine, but the outside layers have to meet the dress code,” Mr. McQueer said.
