Art Parker, a longtime board member for the Watertown Red and Black who acted as the teams general manager during the early 1990s, died on Wednesday. He was 87.
Parker served on the board of directors for at least three decades and later worked for the New York Amateur Football League where the Red and Black played in the late 1990s.
During a franchise low point in 1990 when the Red and Black struggled on the field and at the gate, the team didnt have a coach between seasons, and Parker served as the teams representative. Parker and other board members then selected assistant coach George Ashcraft to lead the team in February 1991. Ashcraft has been head coach of the Red and Black the past 23 years.
Parker later helped start the Watertown Revolution, which is in its sixth season.
