AG’s office should be investigating itself

If there ever was a story of too little, too late and in the wrong place, the recent conduct of the attorney general’s office concerning home improvement contractors demonstrates it all.

Well, maybe not “too little.” How much money did the AG’s office obtain in the fining of businesses that might have made an innocent mistake? I know that at least some of those businesses have honest and caring people behind them, and I do know a lot about “home improvements” and courts of law.

Too late? How about 15 years too late?

This was a situation that needed intervention many years ago, but the only steady work I saw from Deborah Rathbun and Marty Mack of the AG’s office in the Eliot Spitzer era was to harass and intimidate complainants so we and others would just get off their desks. It worked, and the current state of affairs is the fault of their own office.

Wrong place — here’s news for you, AG’s office: The guys from 15 years ago know how to get around your “laws” now. They have had a decade and a half to practice!

Look into the public sector — grant money just might let the bad guys get both materials and labor for their private homes, rental properties and projects. Maybe in 20 years you’ll do something about that.

Meanwhile, my heart goes out to honest contractors and honest homeowners, the vast majority of whom may have to suffer as we wait for the few really rotten apples to come to justice. My advice to the AG’s office: Investigate yourself!
