GREAT BEND The Carthage Central School District Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to hire another kindergarten teacher and another second-grade teacher for Black River Elementary because of potential overcrowding.
At a board meeting in July, Superintendent Peter J. Turner said about 50 pupils would be reassigned from West Carthage Elementary to Black River Elementary because of overcrowded classrooms and a lack of space to add more teachers at West Carthage. Enrollment at most schools in the district ebb and flow as Fort Drum families arrive and leave.
As of Monday, 117 children were enrolled in kindergarten and 102 were enrolled in second grade at Black River, where the class sizes would range from 22 to 24 without the additional teachers. Mr. Turner said the new teachers are needed because he is concerned that enrollment will increase.
The school year begins Sept. 4.
If we need to start the year with substitutes, well start the year with substitutes, Mr. Turner said. We want to hire quality teachers
