HOPKINTON The Town Council has voted to give itself the authority to exceed the states statutory tax hike limit.
Town officials say the approval doesnt mean there are plans to adopt a town budget that calls for a tax hike of more than 2 percent. The resolution, which required the support of at least 60 percent of the board, merely gives the town the authority to exceed the cap.
The tax cap initiative championed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo requires the local governments and school districts to raise taxes no more than 2 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less, according to a statement on the state Department of States website. There are some factors, however, that may raise or lower that figure.
