Witnesses to an apparent suicide attempt at Belmont Courts in Ogdensburg early Friday say they saw no warnings that the victim would turn a gun on himself until they found him laying outside their apartment with a gunshot wound to his head.

Todd J. Tyo, 25, and Susan A. Bogart, 22, of 417 Belmont Courts, identified the victim as Tyler Scott, an acquaintance who had been visiting them Thursday night. The couple said he came over to their home, the scene of the shooting, around 3 p.m. Thursday.

“He was real friendly,” Mr. Tyo said Monday. “He just showed up and said ‘What’s up, man, how are you?’ He asked to hang out. I had no idea anything was wrong.”

Mr. Tyo said he was making popcorn late that night while he overheard Mr. Scott talking on his cellphone.

“He was talking to his ex-girlfriend, crying,” Mr. Tyo said. “I heard him saying something about her calling the cops on him. She accused him of taking her TV, and said she was coming over here with a sheriff.”

At around 2 a.m., Mr. Tyo and Ms. Bogart went to bed. A few minutes later, he said, he and Ms. Bogart heard a gunshot.

“After we heard the shot we both got up and came downstairs,” Mr. Tyo said. “I checked the recliner, and he was gone. He was in the recliner like all night, so when I didn’t see him there I was worried. His cell phone was in the chair, too. I went out the back door and didn’t see him. But I walked a little farther and saw him near the sidewalk towards the road.”

Mr. Tyo said he saw Mr. Scott laying on his stomach with his head turned. He said he saw a gunshot wound underneath his chin.

“I thought he was dead when I first walked up on him,” Ms. Bogart said. “He wasn’t moving at all.”

Ogdensburg police, St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies, city firefighters and Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad personnel responded to the 911 call made by Ms. Bogart at 2:12 a.m.

Outside the 400 section of Belmont Courts, city police recovered a .357 caliber revolver believed to be the weapon used.

“I knew he had the gun,” Mr. Tyo said. “I didn’t know that he would use it.”

Mr. Tyo said Mr. Scott had acted like he might have been on drugs, but he did not see Mr. Scott use any drugs while at his home.

Mr. Scott wasn’t a resident of Belmont Courts, Ms. Bogart said. She said this was the fourth time Mr. Scott had visited their home, and the first time he came to their home alone.

“Last I knew he lived with his ex-girlfriend in Lisbon,” Ms. Bogart said.

City police on Monday would not identify Mr. Scott as the person who was shot. Police also would not say whether the shooting was a suicide attempt.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and to this point it would appear that the injuries sustained by the victim were self-inflicted,” Detective Daniel C. Mousaw said.

Police would also not say whether charges would be filed against him for discharging a firearm within the city limits.

As of early Monday afternoon, an official at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, said Mr. Scott was in “stable, but critical” condition. Ms. Bogart said she is still in shock.

“We don’t use the back door anymore just because that’s where it happened,” Ms. Bogart said.

“His very last steps were – out there,” Mr. Tyo said.

City police are asking anyone with information that may aid their investigation to contact them at 393-1551.
