FORGED INSTRUMENT - BRASHER CENTER - Massena-based state police charged John E. Funk, 31, of 155 Hopson Road, Brasher with a felony count of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument Thursday. He was arraigned by Massena Town Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and released under the supervision of the probation department.

Funk allegedly exchanged a forged check to Barbra T. Goodreau for $140 on Aug. 26. It was later realized the check had been written on a Community Bank starter check that had been stolen from Ms. Goodreau.

She told police Funk had given her a check dated Aug. 24 purportedly signed by Katherine Boswell with Construction written in the memo line on the check.

Funk lives with Ms. Goodreau and her daughter, Rosmary. “In the past Jon has given me checks from his employer, Katherine Boswell, and I give him cash, then put the check into my checking account. Today I went to my bank, Community Bank, to cash the check. When I attempted to cash the check, the teller advised me that the check was from my checking account and gave me the check back. The check is not in my handwriting ...,” she noted in the statement she signed for police.
