COLTON - End-of-summer activities in the town of Colton during Labor Day weekend include whitewater kayaking at the Stone Valley section of the Raquette River.

The last two of six releases this summer by Brookfield Renewable Energy take place on Saturday and Monday.

Expert kayakers often travel hundreds of miles from places within the eastern United States and Canada for the predictable and challenging conditions at Stone Valley. They paddle the river at their own risk and on release days they usually get going around 10am when the water is at the full release level. Beforehand spectators will see them hiking the trails and checking conditions of the river.

On Saturday the Raquette River Blueway Corridor tent will be set up and staffed by volunteers at the trailhead on Riverside Drive in Colton just past the Fire Station. They will have a variety of free information including updated brochures with maps of the Raquette River and Stone Valley published by Brookfield. Also they will be selling Colton tee shirts at both the tent and nearby at the Colton Information Center in the Museum on Main Street. The Colton Information Center is staffed daily by volunteers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Labor Day.

On Saturday, the Colt’s Pride Booster Club will be selling hot dogs and hamburgers at the Fire Station on Riverside Drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Other food options during the weekend include the Hide Away Café on Gulf Road, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner plus Whit’es General Store on state Highway 56 and the Kunoco Food Mart at the corner of State Highways 56 and 68. And at 2 p.m. on Saturday the Finish Line Lounge on Main Street opens but will be closed for the holiday on Monday.

Restroom facilities are available at both the Museum and the Finish Line Lounge when open.
