Registered Republicans and Conservatives voting in the Sept. 10 primary in the town of Champion may have been left a bit confused regarding where to cast their ballots.
The Jefferson County Board of Elections mailed approximately 650 letters dated Aug. 22 to town residents noting that the towns three polling sites Champion Fire Department for voters in District 1; West Carthage Fire Department for voters in District No. 2, and Carthage Central School District offices for District 3 had been consolidated into one at the Champion Fire Department.
According to representatives from the Board of Elections, the measure was to be taken as a way to reduce the cost of operating polling sites, as primaries tend to have lower voter turnout than general elections. However, as of Wednesday, the board reversed its decision because of the interest in this particular race. Residents should expect a letter in the coming days regarding the decision.
Polling sites will be open from noon to 9 p.m. on primary day.
