Duvé independent petitions challenged

CANTON — An Ogdensburg man has filed a challenge to St. Lawrence County District Attorney Nicole M. Duvé’s independent petitions for a line on this November’s ballot.

Ms. Duvé, a Democrat, is running for re-election. She is challenged by Mary E. Rain, who is running on the Republican, Conservative and Independence party lines.

The challenge to Ms. Duve’s independent petitions was filed by Edward Martin, Route 37.

His initial challenge contained no specifics but he has until Tuesday to spell out his objections, county Democratic Election Commissioner Jennie H. Bacon said.

Mr. Martin was not available for comment.

Ms. Duvé turned in 1,734 signatures on her independent petitions to the county Board of Elections.

She needs 1,500 valid signatures in order for the petitions to stand.

An earlier challenge to Ms. Rain’s Independence Party petitions was ruled invalid by the Board of Elections.

The Board of Elections scheduled a hearing into the challenges identified by Canton resident Anne Monck on the Rain petitions because Ms. Rain requested one, Mrs. Bacon said.

If a hearing is not requested, Mrs. Bacon and Republican Election Commissioner Thomas A. Nichols will rule on the specific objections identified by Mr. Martin.

Ms. Duvé was not available for comment.
