Ogdensburg airport gets a $3 million federal grant for runway rehab

Ogdensburg International Airport will receive $3 million from the federal government to repave its 5,200-foot-long runway.

On Wednesday, U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand announced release of $3,103,654 for the airport from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program.

Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority Deputy Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer Frederick S. Morrill said the FAA funding is appreciated.

“We’re excited about this,” he said. “It’s great news.”

OBPA Director of Operations Steven J. Lawrence said that the repaving, which will be done by Barrett Paving, Norwood, will take three months to complete. The work will be done at night so as not to disturb Cape Air commuter flights or any other aviation activity at airport.

“There will be no disruption of service,” Mr. Lawrence said.

No starting date has been set for the repaving.

In other airport runway business, the authority is awaiting the results of a consultant’s feasibility study on expanding its airport’s runway and terminal.

McFarland-Johnson, Binghamton, was hired last spring for a fee of $89,283. Its final report is due next month.

“We’re still working on that,” Mr. Morrill said.

The authority wants to expand the length of the runway from 5,200 feet to 6,000 feet in order to accommodate larger commercial airplanes. That, OBPA officials hope, will lead to increased activity at the airport and make the facility profitable.
