A discarded cigarette is blamed for a small fire this afternoon near the entrance to Denny’s restaurant, 1142 Arsenal St.

Watertown City Battalion Chief Timothy P. “Tucker” Wiley said the cigarette had somehow become inserted into a small crack in a front window’s molding and it was unknown how long the fire smoldered before being noticed just after 3 p.m.

The chief said firefighters had to remove the window and its molding to get at the flames inside with extinguishers and also had to remove some Sheetrock to make sure the fire had not spread to adjacent walls.

A sign on the restaurant’s door said the business expected to reopen at 5 p.m.
