CHIPPEWA BAY – It’s harvest season, and the hamlet is once again celebrating in a big way.

The Chippewa Bay Fish and Game Club will hold its annual corn roast Saturday.

The tradition of the sportsman club’s corn roast goes back 40 years, club member Kayne Langtry said.

“I can remember going back to when I was a boy,” he said. “The club started the roast as a way to boost membership in the summer. Now it’s become a town tradition, and it’s something people really look forward to going to every year. It really is a good time.”

Between 300 and 400 people attend the event every year, he said.

“For many, it’s about seeing people you don’t normally see,” Mr. Langtry said. “Many seniors come out and young people are interested in what it’s all about, too.”

But the day’s main event isn’t the corn. At 1 p.m., the Ninth Annual Women’s River Rat Contest will pit women ages 13 and up against each other in a north country-themed obstacle course.

Contestants will sport thigh-high rubber boots and carry a baby doll in a papoose while they race through an obstacle course of balancing, setting a tip-up, sawing wood, hammering a nail, casting a fishing rod, shooting a target, making a whipped-cream pie and changing a baby’s diaper before they ring a bell. It takes about three to four minutes to complete the whole course, Mr. Langtry said. The competition can be very fierce, he said.

“It’s a lot of fun to watch,” he said.

Contestants will compete for first-, second- and third-place prizes.

Food will be served beginning at 4 p.m. The menu includes all the corn you can eat, limburger cheese and crackers, macaroni salad, baked beans, salt potatoes, hot dogs, hamburgers and sausage sandwiches. Beverages will be available for purchase.

“A lot of people come just for the cheese,” Mr. Langtry said.

The band Back Road Bluegrass will perform at 6 p.m. A Dewalt 18-volt, four-piece combo kit, five cords of fire wood and $100 cash will be raffled off. A 50/50 raffle will also take place throughout the day.

The cover charge is $7.
