AGGRAVATED DWI - POTSDAM - Village police charged Joseph J. Schneller, 32, of Canton with felony counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and ticketed him for having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle on a public highway following a traffic stop at 1:59 a.m. Friday on Main Street. He was also charged with public urination. He was arraigned by Potsdam Village Justice Nicholas Pignone and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $500 cash or $1,000 bond.
Police saidafter observing Schneller several times operating a motor vehicle in the downtown area they found him standing in front of his vehicle urinating in the Main Street parking lot. Police said the vehicle was parked incorrectly and the engine still running.
Schneller, who has a prior driving while intoxicated conviction in the past 10 years, admitted he had driven the vehicle to the Main Street parking lot from the downtown area. He reportedly had a blood alcohol content of 0.23 percent, nearly three times the 0.08 percent threshold for a DWI. A DWI charge is elevated to aggravated DWI when the blood alcohol content is 0.18 percent of higher.
