Carbon fiber makes good fishinbg lures

Carbon fiber is being used for everything from stealth aircraft to golf clubs and now even fish lures.

An Ogdensburg family has innovated the concept.

The lure idea started as a joke when Glenn Miller jokingly asked his son, Derrick, to make a carbon fiber fishing lure for his birthday. Why not?

It seems Derrick (DJ), a Design Development Engineer for General Composites near Plattsburgh NY, took his dad’s joke seriously. Working from his home workshop, DJ designed a willow leaf blade on a computer.

The design image was then programmed on his CNC router to mill out the mold for shaping the composites. Following the mold construction, several different composite patterns were laid out on a single mold and processed.

The finished blades were then strung on mono filament dressed with colored beads and hooks to form a walleye harness.

So on the eve of August 18th the Miller family anxiously dropped their prototype lures into the St. Lawrence River for a test run. After a second pass over their favorite fishing hole, silence was interrupted by pandemonium as they successfully landed several nice walleyes, using what is believed to be the world’s first ever, all carbon fiber, fishing lures.

The walleye pictured to the right is 7 pounds, 27” long, with a 15-1/2” girth. The following day several more walleyes were caught and released, proving the previous day’s catch was not a fluke.

Derrick states that the project was great family fun and very rewarding to see a silly idea become a successful reality.

Ideas for several other blade types are in process. However, there are no plans to manufacture and market this product as the cost benefit to the sportsmen is believed to be too high.
