David E. Thompson Jr., 26, of 209 William St., Apt. 622-A, was charged by Watertown police about 6 p.m. Thursday with fourth-degree attempted grand larceny and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
It is alleged that about 4 p.m., he tried to steal $186 from the shirt pocket of Joseph Makuch, 415½ E. Main St., outside a State Street convenience store. Police said Mr. Thompson tried to remove the money as he told Mr. Makuch that he was going to take it.
It is further alleged that as police were arresting Mr. Thompson, they found two small bags of a white crystal substance in his pocket that tested positive as methamphetamine.
He is due to answer the charges in City Court.
