POTSDAM - The Clarkson University mens team led the way at the four-team Bears Fall Invitational golf tournament at the Potsdam Town and Country Club on Tuesday.
The Golden Knights posted a score of 310 to capture the title followed by SUNY Oswego at 312, while host SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton tied for third at 319.
Each of the Clarksons top five golfers shot sub-80 Tuesday afternoon on the par 72 lay-out at PTCC, helping lead the Golden Knights to a two-stroke victory at the Potsdam Bears Fall Golf Invitational held at the par-72 Potsdam Town and Country Club.
Junior Tyler Cline (Tuxedo, NY) and sophomore transfer Ben Stone (Parishville, NY), a former Section 10 champion competing for Potsdam Central, each were two shots (77) behind Hickeys pace, while senior Rob Wood (Westford, VT) and sophomore Evan Cody (Malta, NY) each came away with a 78. Sophomore Matt Blair (South Glens Falls, NY) was Clarksons fifth golfer with a more than respectable 79.
Bears sophomore John Hickey (Au Sable Forks, N.Y.) was the medalist for the individual competition with a round of 75. Potsdam classmate Conor Talty (Fairport, N.Y.) was three strokes behind with a 78, with senior Harrison Davenport (Auburn, N.Y.) following with an 82. Sophomore Kevin Doherty (Amherst, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Merriman (Potsdam, N.Y.) were separated by just a single stroke with an 84 and 85, respectively.
The SUNY Canton mens golf team put together a solid performance as Zach Meade (Tupper Lake, NY) carded a four-over par 76 finishing second overall individually just one stroke off of the pace. Mike Reilly (Colton, NY) recorded a 78, while Nate Christy (Canton, NY) tallied an 82. Nolan Reid (Champlain, NY) and Brandon Pupp (Oneida, NY) rounded out the scorers with an 83 and 92, respectively.
Also competing for Clarkson on Tuesday at PTCC were; Dan Netter (83), Nick Helgeland (85), Scott Henning (87) and Matt Miller (87). Other SUNY Potsdam shooters included; Dan Kurtz (81), former Potsdam Central standouts Konnor Bigwarfe (86) and Dan Cruikshank (87), Tom Mills (88) and William Vlad (91). Rounding out the SUNY Canton lineup were; Dave Parker (91), Chris Schmidbauer (91), Nick Speech (92), Kyle Clark (94), Steve McCorduck (105) and Anthony Levato (105).
All three North Country squads will be back in action in Canton this weekend at the two-day St. Lawrence Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at SLUs Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course. Teams will tee off at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday.
