Lyonsdale highway superintendent says he doesn’t want the job

LYONSDALE — Matthew J. Farr’s name will appear on the ballot in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, but the town of Lyonsdale highway superintendent is now saying he doesn’t want anyone to vote for him.

“I don’t agree with the direction the town board is taking the town,” he said.

He contacted the Lewis County Board of Elections when he decided he didn’t want to run, but discovered “It was too late. The ballots had already been printed.”

Also on the ballot is fellow Democrat Randall Baslow. Republicans Terry L. Swiernik and Theodore Mooney are contending for the Republican line.

Mr. Farr declined to endorse another candidate.

“For the sake of the town, I hope whoever wins can work with [the board],” he said, adding, “It’s not that they did anything wrong, but I just don’t agree with them.”

He said he had difficulty in communicating with board members, specifically over budget issues.

“Never, at any time, did I know how much money the town has,” he said, blaming sporadic budget reports.

Looking through his records, he found the last report he was given was in June. Referring to the report before that, he said, “There was still snow on the ground for that one.”

Though support signs for Mr. Farr are posted throughout the town, he said he hasn’t been campaigning.

”Some people had old signs from last time. They were putting them up,” he said.

Mr. Farr’s term runs through December.

“I’m going to try my best to finish out the year with the current board,” he said.
