Black River woman indicted on 52 counts alleging sex abuse of children

A Black River woman has been indicted on 52 counts alleging that she repeatedly sexually abused three children under the age of 15.

Nicole E. Hargis, 30, of 27882 Route 342, is charged with two counts each of predatory sexual assault against a child and first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, as well as 36 counts of second-degree criminal sexual act, four counts of third-degree rape, three counts each of third-degree criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of second-degree rape.

The charges were contained in a grand jury indictment handed up Tuesday in Jefferson County Court.

The indictment alleges that starting in the fall of 2007 and ending sometime in October 2008 she engaged in two or more sexual acts with a female child, starting when the girl was about 11. It also alleges that from September 2007 to March 2010, she engaged in two or more sexual acts with a second girl, starting when the child was 10, and during the spring of 2011 she had sexual intercourse with a boy about 15.

Hargis had pleaded guilty April 19 in County Court to single counts of third-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child. She initially was scheduled to be sentenced June 17 to 10 years’ probation and be ordered to register with the state as a sex offender.

However, on the day of sentencing she withdrew her plea, sending the matter to the grand jury for consideration.

At the time of her plea, she had admitted that she had sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old boy in June 2012 in the town of LeRay and that she had sexual contact with an 11-year-old girl in the summer of 2006.
