St. Lawrence University’s Office of the Chaplain is presenting “Music for High Holy Days” at 12 p.m. Friday for its monthly Noon in the Chapel recital in Gunnison Memorial Chapel on the Canton campus.

In honor of this month’s Jewish religious holidays, Musician-in-Residence Sondra Goldsmith Proctor will perform pipe-organ music from a volume dedicated to organists and composers who were persecuted in the Holocaust. The program uses musical themes and traditional chants heard during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. Rosh Hashanah began Wednesday and winds up Friday. Yom Kippur is Sept. 13 and 14.

Accompanying Ms. Goldsmith Proctor will be mezzo-soprano Julia Pomainville and soprano Alexandra Jacobs Wilke.

The texts for Jewish High Holy Day services ask for peace for the world and for the individual.

The Yizkor service (a time of remembrance for those who have died) on Yom Kippur concludes with Av Harachamim, a prayer for the souls of all Jewish martyrs.

The Rosh Hashanah liturgy features the Aleinu, the verses of Divine Remembrance/Providential Attentiveness and the Shofar Blasts.
