Jefferson Community College is having another record enrollment year, and expects a further boost when its residence hall is complete.

As of Tuesday, 4,000 students were signed up for fall classes, a 1.74 percent increase from the same time last year.

“We’ve been over 4,000, but that’s usually later in the semester,” Vice President for Students Betsy D. Penrose said at Wednesday’s board of trustees meeting.

As of Aug. 22, before classes began, 3,720 students were enrolled, which means 280 more students signed up in just the past two weeks.

The enrollment includes 49 students in the chemical dependency program and 29 in fire protection technology, two programs that were approved by the board last school year.

Of the college’s enrollment, 38.3 percent are military-related.

“So, the news for enrollment is good,” Mrs. Penrose said.

In other business, President Carole M. McCoy said the college received the building permit for the planned $17.5 million, 298-unit dormitory on Wednesday.

“We are no longer working on the ground level,” she said excitedly. “We are in the depths of this project, and obviously there’s a lot of work to make it happen.”

She said the construction is on schedule. According to a previous interview with Faculty-Student Association President Jack N. Donato, the outside of the building is expected to be done by Thanksgiving so the inside can be worked on through the winter.

The building is expected to be completely furnished and staffed to open next July.
