South Jefferson attempts to break out

The scenario for South Jefferson football has been almost the same for several years now.

The Spartans usually have a smallish roster, which means little depth. This year just 24 players are on the varsity.

They do have some talent at key positions, but keeping those players healthy is always a question if they want to be competitive in the rugged Class B East division.

“We feel we have the ability to improve if the many new players develop quickly,” said third-year head coach Pat Conners. “I believe our program is headed in the right direction.”

Conners will have a new quarterback, choosing between Eric Mullin and Adam Hutchinson. That means it will take them awhile to become comfortable at the controls.

The Spartans have a couple of productive running backs in Logan Jones and Dylan Beckstead, while tight end Aaron Nowlin is a valuable target. Senior linemen Joe Parkinson and Greg Gilligan lead an otherwise young group up front on both sides of the line.

The Spartans’ junior varsity went 6-1 a year ago, so they at least know what it takes to compete in the league.
