MASSENA – The Chateaugay varsity volleyball team began the 2013 season the same way the team opened last season, with a win.
The CCS spikers traveled to Massena on Thursday to open the Northern Athletic Conference East Division campaign and returned home with a 3-1 victory.
The Lady Bulldogs won the first two games by scores of 25-17 and 25-20 with Massena stepping up its play with a 25-22 victory in game three. Chateaugay capped the season-opening victory over the defending Class B champs with a 25-10 win in game four. Massena finished last year with a 14-3 regular season record and won the Class B title to represent Section 10 in state play.
Chateaugay is the defending Class D champ, finishing the 2012 season with a 17-0 regular season record, and had several players step forward in the opener. Caitlin Miller led the play at the net with 11 kills while Kylie Hanley paced the Bulldogs with points (14) and assists (22). Miller added nine assists to the win.
Kendra King and Dailey Dowd followed with nine service points each as Dowd, the Bulldogs Libero (a defensive specialist that plays in the back row only), recorded two aces and had a strong defensive game. Shelby Yanulavich added an eight-point, six-kill effort as Kim Reville provided six service points and nine kills to the Chateaugay cause. Erin Ashline added five kills to the CCS victory.
